Chair Study

Build a Rhino model of the three bentwood chairs that were shown in class and create a rendering and drawing that features the chairs as its primary subject.

Your Rhino model should be as true to the form, proportions and scale of the chairs as possible, but certain components and features can be simplified or omitted. The primary modeling tool for the bent components should be the “pipe” command with the other basic surfacing commands used for the other components (extrude, revolve, planarsrf, etc).

The rendering aspect of this project requires that you render the chairs into a scene. This rendering will be created with Keyshot, working with original or found photos.

The drawing aspect of this project requires that you depict at least one of the chairs being used. This drawing will be created on the pen plotter on 18″x24″ paper. The linework of the chair is to be plotted, but the other aspects of the drawing that show it’s use are to be drawn by hand.

Learning Outcomes:

Rhino

  • familiarity drawing and manipulating complex, three dimensional curves
  • experience translating forms, proportions, and dimensions from an existing physical object into a 3D Rhino model
  • experience using basic surfacing tools, including “Pipe” and “ExtrudeCrv” to create a complex composition of forms in space
  • experience organizing a multi-component, multi-object file using layers
  • skills with prepping a file for plotting, including the “Make2D” command
  • an ability to operate a digital pen plotter

Keyshot

  • experience using texture and transparency mapping to simulate materials
  • experience compositing a model into a scene

Evaluation Criteria
A= Excellent
B= Above Average
C= Average
D= Poor
F= Failing

Practical

  • Does the Rhino model follow the submission criteria?
  • Does the rendering follow the stated requirements?
  • Does the drawing follow the stated requirements?

Craft

  • Are the curves drawn with an appropriate number of control points?
  • Do the models accurately capture the form, scale, and proportions of the reference chairs?
  • Is the Rhino file neatly and deliberately organized?

Drawing

  • Does the drawing demonstrate success using the plotter?
  • Does the drawing exhibit a thougtful, creative approach to compostion, form, and materiality?

Rendering

  • Does the rendering effectively communicate the form and materials of the chair?
  • Is the composition attractive and well thought-out?
  • Is the image of a high quality?
